IPv6 integration to *BSD in 1994/1995, there were 7 independent implementations in WIDE each has only 1 maintainer, so the code could be wasted (manpower) we decided to merge them into one as a joint effort - KAME project (1996-) there are two other major implementations in the world - INRIA and NRL KAME, INRIA and NRL sit together for integration good amount of idea/code exchange funding for INRIA and NRL work ends - so KAME (with INRIA/NRL contributions) is the last one standing we have integrated IPv6 to *BSD around 1999-2000 timeframe it is important that all *BSD IPv6 code is from the same origin otherwise we have portability issues and maintenance headache
